When Old Mutual National Choir Festival stage Regional Eliminations, people always see choirs ascending the stage, sing and disappear back-stage. They never thought or investigate how did choirs managed to find themselves honouring a competition. The past week I spent some days trying to establish and compiling some facts about the role Free State Provincial Government play in these events, officials time-offs, facilities made available, sponsors’ employees deployed, choirs’ expenses ( 11 from Standard and 5 from Large), cost involved in their transport to competitions, cost for uniform, cost for transporting members during preparations (some as far as from the coast), many hours of preparations (some staging over-night camps), choristers being mugged by tsotsis on a regular basis to and from rehearsals, sub-standards venue for rehearsals and cost for technical aspect of preparations by sourcing assistance from music experts . All these are done in the name of going to sing and make the province proud. All such efforts, go down the drain as provinces are made to fail to make the Final Stage.
