When Robert Martin Gumbura was arrested, tried and convicted for - TopicsExpress

When Robert Martin Gumbura was arrested, tried and convicted for raping more than a dozen women a few months ago, many in the MDC welcomed his 40 year jail sentence and applauded our criminal justice system for acting swiftly in defense of the vulnerable in our society. Of course they were perfectly justified in doing this. No one should ever support such abhorrent criminal conduct. But there was something terribly strange and grossly hypocritical about the MDC stance. Those in the MDC who spoke in favor of Gumbura’s lengthy incarceration did so as if they were ignorant of the goings on in their own party. Time and time again Morgan Tsvangirai has demonstrated little regard for the rights and dignity of women. He has changed them literally like underwear, impregnated them at will and dumped a handful of them in unimaginably insensitive circumstances. Of course where Tsvangirai has led, others have followed. In the recent past a string of MDC officials have been hauled to the courts for different offences against women including failure to pay maintenance and rape. Today we read in the Herald that MDC MP for Budiriro, Costa Machingauta, was arrested in Gweru last Friday allegedly for raping an MSU student he had lured to his hotel room. It has become acceptable for MDC officials to sleep with women (whether consent has been given or not) and then dump them. This cannot be right. It is now my considered view that it‘s not just Gumbura, but the greater part of the MDC establishment that requires moral reformation
