When Ruth Benedict declared that “No man ever looked at the world with pristine eyes. He sees it edited by a definite set of customs and institutions and ways of thinking,” what she forgot is that, though it is true that traditional leanings and structures have overtime shaped much of human outlook to issues and society in general, and that agreed, knowledge has almost never taken place in a vacuum, what she however forgot is that progressive insights have always being products of pristine thinkers – the reason why societies have moved on. What does it profit societies to hold tenaciously to traditional leanings that fly in the face of modern advancements of life and civilisation? The process conception of God is one that is thoroughly grounded on human experiences, one that does not preclude the experiences of humans and their relationship with the world created by the same God. Hence, religion as much as it is a spiritual process of relating with this same God, has not been excluded from reformation given the ever unfolding realities humans live in the world. Why then do some people hold tenaciously to barbaric practices colouring it with callous, self-fulfilling, unfounded and baseless religious stands that properly bothers on a morbid and mundane quest for satisfaction? What religious position demands that a 40 year old man can marry a defenceless 13year old child? And such religious position is so sacred it’s not debatable? Who gave such a position? God himself? How? Is that not a morbid attempt to use the precious name of a loving God to justify our animal craze and insatiable desires? This is just a way of continuing the enslavement of defenceless children in a modern world where not even God deprived himself of the experience of novelty and progress.
