When Sam was in middle school, she got her first brush with harassment via a boy who was just bad news all the way around. Trying to make light of a difficulty, I said half-jokingly, Why dont you hire Merlin Fabian to be your bodyguard? — in part bc Merlin was the tallest boy in the class. You could just tell he was a great kid....Turns out he was great for the job. He has the heart of a lion, and very quietly hed place himself between her and that rotten kid until the latter finally gave up and left her alone. I just saw on Fb this morning that Merlins father, Alan Fabian, passed away last night, after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Will you remember them in your thoughts today? Merlin now serves as a Norcross, GA, police officer, protecting countless others; and I know he still has the heart of a lion.
