When Socrates and the other great philosophers and sages of antiquity spoke of self-knowledge (Man know thyself!), they were not speaking of sweet mental images and affirmations of ourselves as beautiful and wonderful and already awake but rather of the hard-won knowledge that comes through deep questioning, listening, and awareness in the thick of living. Yes, our possibilities were considered very great, but, first, we had to see truthfully how far we actually were from our lofty visions of ourselves as rational, conscious, loving beings in control of our lives. We had to wake up to ourselves at many levels, and that took serious inner work. It still does.--Dennis Lewis #DennisLewis
