When all Canadians are not let down, everyone will be able to afford a computer with an internet connection in order to enjoy this MSN Welcome to Earth video. I feel bad for the Canadians whom have never seen this, I mean the Canadians whom are behind the Countrys curve of success. When Canadians are not let down it means we do not have to struggle to afford basic needs. Canadian brains need a collective shift to move the majority of people out of survival mode and into study mode. Of course, some people are out of survival mode where it is a struggle to make ends meet, but I do not think the majority of people are. This is contrary to studies and reports. In 2014, I think the majority of Canadians are still in survival mode, which translates into trying to make ends meet. Canadian wages are not high enough to pay for the basic needs of contemporary Canadian living. Canada is too expensive for most. I do not like to ignore how disproportionate the majority of Canadian incomes are in comparison to the cost of basic needs in this country. Our brains can move into study mode instead of being stuck trying to figure out how to pay the bills. Maybe this means Canadians can help to find cures for cancers sooner. More Canadian brains will be available to study Medicine and advances in therapy. More people will be researching breast cancer and HIV. We will save more lives sooner because more people will be devoted to these extremely important problems. Another example, moving more people with stressed out survival mode brains into study mode gets Canadian minds studying how to fix food shortages in the world by doing research on advances in agriculture technology. Example three, moving people out of survival mode quicker moves more people into study mode to study the creative arts. Canadians which previously would have been stressed out from making ends meet on low wages will now be available to produce artwork such as writing, film, music, and traditional art. Example 4, more people in study mode means stopping a war and helping to get more people in other parts of the world out of extreme survival mode. Oil shortage, as many are aware of, leads to war. We should be trying to drill for oil on a slower moving asteroid somewhere in space instead of fighting over oil on the earth, and maybe we can get more Canadian minds studying how to do this. Move people out of survival mode and into studying advanced subjects like oil exploration, space exploration, and other sciences thereby moving the human race into space sooner to find resources such as oil (which we historically fight each other for). From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: “The basic needs approach is one of the major approaches to the measurement of absolute poverty in developing countries. It attempts to define the absolute minimum resources necessary for long-term physical well-being, usually in terms of consumption goods. The poverty line is then defined as the amount of income required to satisfy those needs. The basic needs approach was introduced by the International Labour Organizations World Employment Conference in 1976. Perhaps the high point of the WEP was the World Employment Conference of 1976, which proposed the satisfaction of basic human needs as the overriding objective of national and international development policy. The basic needs approach to development was endorsed by governments and workers’ and employers’ organizations from all over the world. It influenced the programmes and policies of major multilateral and bilateral development agencies, and was the precursor to the human development approach.” In my opinion, the following are contemporary examples of what the basic Canadian needs of today are. After all, this is what seems to be advertised as affordable for every Canadian on television these days. The basic Canadian needs: shelter ($1500/month condo mortage payments), food (expensive diet foods), transportation (a compact car using $1.20/L gas), and clothing (expensive sun protective clothing/sunscreen). You are not alone when you wonder why you have to go into debt in order to afford the cost of gas or the price of an airplane flight, or the cost of a Tim Hortons coffee and University tuition. So, 1976, the International Labour Organizations World Employment Conference? Are we anywhere near this objective for people yet? Today, go outside and look at your Canadian neighbor and ask yourself if you think they are in survival mode or study mode. The point is they are part of the Canadian collective of people and we need to move more brains out of struggle mode. Maybe he or she works for the Canadian Government. Maybe your Canadian neighbor is part of a private company like Canadian Tire, Tim Hortons, or one of the big five Canadian banks. Maybe he or she is a residential landlord in Canada. Maybe your Canadian neighbor works in a public or private Post Secondary Institution. Our government, our employers, our private companies such as retail and grocery stores, and our land lords have to find a way to a solution which will collectively raise wages and lower the cost of rent, food, clothing and transportation. The other 70 Canadian people on my block in Edmonton will then have the money available to get out of survival mode and into study mode. Some people say this problem is being addressed, or maybe being slowly figured out. Slowly figured out...that is the problem. Again, the problem of closing the gap which exists between the majority of Canadian wages and the cost of basic needs in Canada. Again, the problem of collectively moving Canadian brains out of survival mode where life is a struggle. For example, on my city block in Edmonton there are about 100 people living in apartments. Lets say approximately 30 of them are not struggling because their wages are actually high enough to pay for all all of their basic needs. So, this is decent. Yeah right. There are 30 people in study mode. The 70 other Canadians on the block are struggling and in survival mode, which means they are not in study mode and they cannot focus on things like advances in cancer treatments. This is sad. Here is Canadian reality for most. It is survival mode. Food: just enough cheap food that is not healthy, cheap foods nowadays are high in fat, sodium, cholesterol, and the list goes on. Shelter: a cheap and uncomfortable place to live. Not healthy, cheap rent = stressful living conditions such as limited privacy. Clothing: barely enough clean clothes. A number of employers notice how someone is dressed and this is not enough to look successful, desirable and employable. Transportation: sometimes being able to afford to take public transit, but mostly walking from destination to destination. In Canadas fast, high expectations society this is just not being productive. Are you one of the people whom thought critically about this ten years ago, fifteen years ago, twenty years ago? Yes, its still an issue because we have not found a solution yet. I think this is contrary to professional Canadian studies. So what happened? Generally, wages are not high enough. Period. Thats us. Canadians. Our lucky ones may be able to afford two out of four of the basic needs. So, someone can drive a small car and barely afford rent, but she still cannot afford healthy food or to protect herself from skin cancer with $8/bottle sunscreen. Well, she can do all of this if she goes into debt. Some can barely afford one out of four basic needs. So, he has rent for a place to live, barely, but he cannot afford to eat healthy and eat right. Perhaps she cannot afford to look nice and feel good about herself because she does not have all of the basic needs, in her case it is clothing to look successful among her peers, and she is definitely thinking about studying but she cannot seriously focus on a subject because she is struggling. She may never be able to catch up to her successful friends because she is undermined by the massive gap which exists between her wage and the cost of her basic needs. Its tearfully sad. If we fix the problem, the inappropriate gap between Canadian wages and the affordability of basic needs in Canada, might we expect another baby boom because of much fewer poor and under confident money-stressed single Canadians? This would mean more people are available to study important subjects if they are not born into a Canada where they have to struggle to meet their basic needs. Wouldnt it be the right thing to do, collectively solve this problem quickly to end the misery of that sweet girl? With her absurd low Canadian wage and expensive rent she cannot afford the occasional new clothes from Walmart (I am aware Walmart is American and Bud and Sam Walton are as well). A feeling of self worth to raise her confidence (yes, from some pretty clothes) will give her the chance to go out to finally meet the boy of her dreams. She will be less stressed from trying to make ends meet and she will be able to focus on studying a subject at school in study mode. Maybe she studies Medicine and she is the one to find the best cure for breast cancer.
