When do we know when its time to let go? When do we know when its time to stop treatments and provide comfort, when there is no cure? Everyone has their own ways of expression and their opinion. But its personal, each person and situation is unique. Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts. You have to look at the facts in any given situation and weight the options knowing that you have done the best you can with the knowledge and tools at you have. What may be right for one person, may very well not be another. There’s no right or wrong answer. It’s a personal matter for each pet owner. The goal is to keep your friend with you for as long as he’s comfortable, but let him go if he’s in pain. Sometimes it’s clear that it’s time to let your friend go. You just know. He doesn’t eat. Or he can’t control when or where he poops and pees. Maybe all he can do is lie there. And due to his illness or age, you know that none of this will get any better. It’s a bleak outlook, but it makes the decision easier. Remember that pets live in the moment. One of the most wonderful things about animals is how they embrace the present. The Rule of “Five Good Things”: Pick the top five things that your pet loves to do. Write them down. When he or she can no longer do three or more of them, quality of life has been impacted to a level where many veterinarians would recommend euthanasia. I read the above advice today on my FB page, advising a mutual friend when she would know when to let go of an ill dog....I found this to be the best advice I have ever read......
