When hobos roamed America, or so Ive heard and read, they left signs and symbols marked in charcoal or etched in wood to alert other hobos about whatever they needed to know. Three diagonal lines to the right meant - This is not a safe place. A stick figured woman in a skirt with a same-sized triangle next to her followed by three smaller triangles meant - Kind lady lives here. Tell a pitiful tale. Perhaps it was this sign - the one about the kind lady and the pitiful tale - that was carved by a woodland creature near a suburban home. This suburbanite often tells tales about all the piteous creatures that she has rescued in her dooryard. Once, it was a mouse with the broken tail she found on her stoop. After nestling it in a shoebox, she drove to Tufts Veterinary Hospital for a splint. Then there was the squirrel on her doormat. She didnt know what was wrong with it, but it seemed pleased to travel to Tufts for rehab. Lately it was a fledgling woodpecker that was perched on her doorsill, feebly hammering away. Apparently, it had fallen from its nest. After giving it water from a dropper, it, too, was trundled to Tufts. She has a soft spot for animals, and wild animals seem to know it. Lets Pray: Dear God, your callings can be anything, but they serve Your purposes. Lead us to our purpose, to our calling, and help us see the signs and messages that lead us there. Amen. Heres a Thought: When God calls, listen. Source: worldpath.net/~minstrel/hobosign.htm
