When i was 13, i was taking a bajaj home from school in new delhi, india. I used to read a lot, and with my nose buried in a book, i didnt notice that the driver was taking me the wrong way. When i looked up and realized it, i shouted for him to stop. He kept going. Again the shouts to stop. He started to talk. He told me how pretty i was. Told me to kiss him. He kept turning around with crazy eyes. Kiss me. Kiss me. I was 13. I panicked. I looked around for a weapon. Thankfully, i played the flute in a band and my flute case was a hard box. So, i lifted it up and told him that if he didnt stop the bajaj i would bash his head in. He kept going. I kept threatening. And started swinging the case at which point, he let me off. Cursed me out. And drove away. I was lost. Scared. Couldnt find a taxi. And thirty minutes later, another bajaj came...this time with 2 men. One was old. He looked kind. One was young. He looked disinterested. I prayed and with my flute case held tight, got on and watched, alert and full of adrenaline, as they drove me home. I was 13. That could have turned out oh so differently :( and for a 16 year old school girl in addis abeba, ethiopia, it ended up with her being kidnapped, gang raped and dying of her injuries. All she did was take a taxi. Until justice is served, we will put the pressure on and up. Today, the men are at court at 9am in front of wabe shebelle hotel.
