When it comes to marriage, society still seems to focus on the mans value, and potential lack of freedom. He is the prize, and she, a hopeful weight that will tie him down. His hand in marriage is precious. He is the prince that will make something of a princess out of a ragged girl. She has very little value, and is simply lucky to be chosen by him –finally. The old ball and chain, the warden. Hes seen as unable to soar after the deal is struck. Tradition dictates that she is told, Congratulations perhaps for finally finding someone whos added to her worth. He is told, Best wishes perhaps because his worth is now just slightly less. And this is just in societies where grooms arent paid dowries to take the cow off the hands of her family. Many of these situations play out every day. The comedies where the man freaks out because his lover, of many years, gazed too long at wedding dresses in the windows of the shops, as they walked together. Often his friends talk him down off the ledge. Perhaps a scene where the woman cries openly about wanting him to finally propose. We all smile, we may laugh, but the roles still remain. When she proposes, shes often viewed under an almost tomboyish role. She is masculine, or pushy, or both. She has the power, but still not the value. He is still the prize, and no matter how many times he may say he is lucky to have found her, chances are hes still ridiculed a bit by peers after the ceremony, and she is finally only somewhat visible.
