When it comes to sports, 16-year-old Kealakehe High School junior - TopicsExpress

When it comes to sports, 16-year-old Kealakehe High School junior Pulama Louis adheres to the motto, “You get what you give.” That philosophy requires hard work, discipline, determination and focus on a long-term goal. It has also helped him find success while playing football, baseball and wrestling. So when teacher Derek Monell announced his economics class would be competing in the Hawaii Stock Market Simulation, Louis’ strategy was simple: Apply what you know, which included the motto that has served him well. Over 10 weeks, he learned being physically fit is a lot like being financially fit because key to both is practice, balance, maintenance and learning from setbacks. He also discovered buying what you like, know or think is popular doesn’t necessarily lead to profit, something he saw when his GoPro stock fell. “Not all big companies are worth investigating. It really comes down to putting your money where it counts, looking to the future and realizing you always have options,” he added. In the end of the competition, Louis and his Floating Armadillos teammates got third place in their division, “an accomplishment that feels great” and will be long-lasting because “the lessons go beyond this high school class.” Louis, who plans to go to college and became a firefighter and a pilot, said, “it was valuable prep for the future.” Subscribers follow the link for the full story by WHT reporter Carolyn Lucas-Zenk.
