When it comes to travel in & around Bangkok there are a million stories about taxi driver & tuk-tuk scams & Ive had the privilage of being caught up in most of them so heres a few tips that might save you some money & a bit of time. * Always get a taxi with a working metre when you speak with the taxi driver & arrange a ride make sure he switches the metre on! If they dont, prompt them! Theres one exception to this rule, If the driver quotes you a price & your happy to pay it :) * Airport taxis :- First & foremost Airport taxis are fair! Ive been to Suvarnabumi Airport 6 times & only paid a difference of 50 baht (£1) on one occasion & that was 50 baht cheaper. Theres a taxi desk immediately outside the Airport Arrivals doors so if you feel a little unsure, speak with the attendant at the desk & they will arrange a taxi immediately with receipt & no possible way of a scam! Concerning taxis it all boils down to a few rules... * Where youre going & can the driver get a return fair! - Youll always get rides to Siam, Silom, Sukhumvit, Mochit (bus station) due to the likelihood of a return fair. However if you wanna go to any of the residential areas in Bangkok, the BTS is your best option. * The time of day - Parts of Bangkok can get seriously gridlocked & although that doesnt affect your fair price much (taxi metres move slowly in Thailand) it can be frustrating if youre caught up (add another 20 mins to your journey time) * Regular Taxis - All I can post about regular taxis is numbers & then the rest is upto your skills of negotiation & (The two rules above) From the Airport a taxi to Sukhumvit Soi 4 (Nana) is 400Baht, to anywhere past that i.e (Siam, Silom, Makkasan etc add 50-75baht) & to (Mochit (bus station) & the Grand palace add 100baht) Thats taxis
