When muslim women opt to wear a headscarf they are deemed as oppressed, but when Christian, or even Jewish women choose to wear one they are perceived to being devoted to their beliefs. Whaa!? Why is there such a double standard!? If you are going to object to a muslim wearing a headscarf in devotion to their religious belief, you may as well question a nun being dressed in a headscarf in honour to the respected Virgin Mary. In the Quran, nowhere does it state that women are to be treated like second-class citizens. What it does say is that men and women are required to be modest while mingling with unrelated members of the opposite gender. The content of their speech, the way they communicate, their behaviour and social etiquette in general etc should all be transmitted in a way which attracts the least amount of the wrong attention, for e.g gazing at a woman from head to toe (although if the dudes are honest, theyll admit to the cheeky glances actually happen). Hijab literally means a curtain, or veil and manifests the concept of modesty in the way they dress. So, in order for women to appear modest, they are required by their faith to observe the most visible form of veil in public - the headscarf to cover their hair (Hijab) or to conceal the shape of their body (Niqab/Chador). Whichever they choose to voluntarily dress in is entirely their choice, with the exception of areas where Wahhabism is prevalent (Saudi Arabia, Islamic State) and Afghanistan (Taliban controlled areas). Youll be forgiven as to ponder why a woman would ever want to voluntarily conceal themselves. Theres a list full of reasons, but the most common are: to please their interpretation of God, taking a stand against female exploitation, a source of protection, preserving beauty and to be judged on worth: not on appearance. There are nonetheless women who practise islam that simply choose not to wear a headscarf, or veil - at all. So, to say all muslim females are oppressed is irrational. We may as well say all christian wives submit to their husbands in order to carry out everything he wishes. Ephesians 5:22-24: Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. This is from the Christian bible, NOT the Islamic Quran. Whether a woman is Christian, Muslim or Jewish, they all share similar characteristics. Give em all respect, love, dignity and appreciation. Some of the prejudiced opinions folk are regurgitating about muslims at the moment are nonsensical, deeply offensive and based on absolutely nothing. Its too easy to lambaste a group of people - seriously now, havent we learnt the lessons of the past when it was the Jews who were persecuted throughout Europe?? It appears not.
