When people hear the word Victorian , the first thing that comes to their mind is architecture. However, it is in the reign of Queen Victoria that radical changes in architecture took place. The Victorian era begins in 1837, and ends with her death in 1901. In the Victorian era, people lived elegantly and leisurely. Furniture was inspired from the Gothic,Elizabethan,English rococo, and neoclassical designs. Mahogany, rosewood, walnut, and oak were the primary woods used by the furniture makers .The Victorian people looked for comfort in their furniture, and decorated curves. These are some of my Victorian pieces that will be coming to Charleston the middle of December. They are currently in the Albemarle location. The first pic is of a Victorian settee, with cameo back,c1860-1870, and has been reupholstered. The second pic is of a Victorian parlor chair, meticulously button tufted and reupholstered in beautiful pink. The third pic is of a gothic style, burl walnut full size bed,c.1890. Number 4 is a 3 piece bronze figural Victorian candelabra set,c.1880. Number 5 is a tiger oak side by side,c.1880-1890. Number 6 is a hand carved walnut Victorian settee, with heavy detailed gargoyle carvings, and a child in the crest ( this was probably a nursing bench, people believed gargoyles warded off evil spirits). Number 7 is not a Victorian piece, but it will go to Charleston as well. It is a completely restored period American empire (c.1830) flame mahogany fall front desk(stunning)! Number 8 is a rosewood carved barley twist hall chair. Number 9 is a solid walnut marbletop dresser with swivel mirror,c.1860. Number 10 is a Victorian marbletop drop center princess dresser,c.1890. If you see anything on here you would like to have, let me know before it goes to Charleston.... Thanks!!!
