When the captive bull elephant is in the Musth period, they become aggressive and dangerous to the keeper. Most care takers know that situation and have to be keenly aware of dangers..bulls need special care. When the bull is on Musth they are not only dangerous to the mahout but to the other elephants and people. Sometimes mahouts can be easily killed because the bull is not himself. Most places think that the only way the mahout can manage is to reduce the food and nutrition and chain [typically shackle] the elephant and keep the Musth bull away from the others until the Musth is over . At our place we have our young teenage bull Hope and Jungle boy and Chang Yim. We decided to build the chain free shelter for our bulls . In their property we provided a water fall and swimming pool and a water play area next to a mud spa, for them to therapy while they are on Musth. The water always help to heal and make them calm.
