When the community works together, its good for all. WILLEMSTAD — The dialysis center located in the building of the Jacob Gelt Dekker Institute threatened to be cut off from its water and electricity supply and telephone service due to the bankruptcy of Kurá Hulanda. However, with cooperation of utility company Aqualectra, the haemodialysis could continue, general manager Glenn de Windt confirmed. In principle the telephone service and the electricity and water supply of the dialysis center runs through the Kurá Hulanda Hotel in Otrobanda. When the hotel was closed due to the bankruptcy, the water and electricity supplied to the dialysis center threatened to be cut off. De Windt: “In view of our patients Aqualectra gave us time to arrange a complete new connection. Also our center had to make arrangements so we could have our connection without going through that of Kurá Hulanda.” Expectations are that the switch could be made this weekend. Fortunately, the medical center had no electricity problems. According to De Windt, it was not clear for Aqualectra that the dialysis center was connected to the grid of Kurá Hulanda. Minister of Health, Ben Whiteman, was also informed of the imminent danger. “If the water and electricity supply from Kurá Hulanda was disconnected the patients would have been in danger – through no fault of our own”, the general manager explained. The Curaçao Dialysis Center is managed by Caribbean Medic Healthcare Systems N.V., which is owned by Fresenius Medical Care, an international operating company with more than 2840 dialysis centers worldwide. Directors of the center on Curaçao are Peter Heinen (general) and Rauf Engels (medical). Haemodialysis is a life-saving and therefore necessary treatment for people whose kidneys are hardly or not functioning. Forty-four patients are treated six times a week. Each patient is treated 3 to 3½ hours. This treatment is necessary when the kidneys are no longer able to filter the blood clean. Dialysis can be done in two ways, namely via haemodialysis where the blood is filtered by an artificial kidney, or by peritoneal dialysis, a stomach douche.
