When the goal of government becomes to perpetuate a healthy economy, the health of people will be lost; the GDP of a country is a very poor indicator of the well-being of the people within it. For me, there is the whole philosophical question of whether an economy actually exists. Have you ever seen one? Heard lots about it, sure, but does it exist as anything other than an abstract concept, a memetic descendant of Adam Smith - who was famous for arguing that people are rational, among other things - and, if it is just an abstract concept, then why do we care what it does? Oh, thats right: because the number crunchers say we do. As a material scientist, I never had that much respect for economists, quite frankly. Smoke and mirrors people...
