When we train our dogs were going to use tools to help us. We get to choose what those tools are, our dogs have little choice in the matter. Some make sense because they keep our dogs safe, collars, harnesses, leashes and long lines for example. Others make less sense because there are alternatives available that are less stressful, less discomforting or less painful to the animal. Food is a tool we can use to reinforce behavior and its also a tool we use to create a trusting relationship with a dog. We can use food to lure a dog into performing a behavior and we can use food to reinforce behaviors we like. Once we have the behavior we like we fade the lure (stop using it) and only pay up when we get the behavior.
