When will it end? A 16-year-old boy is in critical condition at Port of Spain General Hospital after he was shot multiple times about his body on Monday evening. Police reports said Matthew Ashton, a pupil of the Russell Latapy School in Morvant, was standing in his yard along Thomasine Street, Laventille, when around 6 p.m. he was confronted by two men. The teenager attempted to flee the scene but as he turned around he was shot about his body receiving injuries to his chest and back. The two assailants fled the scene. A party of officers from the Inter Agency Task Force, who were on mobile patrol in the area at the time, responded to the sound of loud explosions and took the bleeding teenager to the hospital where he was treated. And a police exercise was carried out in the Northern Division on Friday night in Arima as police with their “Safe City Initiative” for the Christmas season. The exercise was co-ordinated by ACP Glenda Jennings-Smith, spearheaded by Senior Supt David Abraham, with assistance from Supt Neville Sankar, Insp Gyan, Sgt Narine, and Sgt Katwaroo, among other officers from the Northern Division. It took place between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m. and a total of ten fixed penalty tickets were issued to drivers in breach of various traffic regulations. Twelve people were also engaged for “stop and search” procedures by officers. One person was held in relation to investigations surrounding a malicious wounding investigation. The exercise was part of the Northern Division’s continuing “zero tolerance” approach to crime in its jurisdiction as mandated by acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams and its committed stance of ensuring that citizens in its jurisdiction have a “safe Christmas”. Similar exercises are expected to be performed on a daily basis into the Yuletide season.
