When you have a letter that explicitly shows HP Lovecraft described himself as sympathetic to Nazis, Hitler, and Mussolini, and you have people doing their most intellectually dishonest best efforts to minimize it, deny it, deflect from it, ignore it, and rationalize it away. . . ugh. It just reinforces the painful truth that many white people care more about not being labeled a racist than fighting/opposing racist beliefs/attitudes in themselves or other white people they like (while okay in doing it against white people they dont like). White people need to stop interacting with the issue of racism where they (white people) care more about not being seen or regarded as racist than they care about actually condemning, identifying, opposing racism on an individual and institutional level. Fighting racism > refusing to acknowledge the possibility you are complicit in racism somehow because you care more about your ego (or how a white person you like is perceived) than you care about ending racism.
