“When you’re constantly being asked to work extra shifts, work overtime, can’t take time off or get vacation time — a nurse can only keep up that pace for so long,” said Forward. “They’re getting burnt out and exhausted. There is no time for them to recover. And the cracks start to show.” Forward said she knows the RN’s on staff are great at their job, and the public would likely not see how the shortage affects them directly, as their dedication and quality of work never wavers, despite the extra workload. “Most people in the area don’t know there is a shortage, because of the quality of care provided day in and day out,” she said. “But this is also about caring for the caregiver.” thelabradorian.ca/News/Local/2014-12-09/article-3969480/Showing-support/1
