Whenever I have knee pain this is my first go to exercise to strengthen my knee. This was shown to me years ago when my was killing me. I do a few steps of this with 30 lbs. I started at 10 lbs years ago but now I can do 30 lbs please be mindful on this exercise. When youre doing it to strengthen the knee the weights shouldnt be to heavy. I usually do about 3 sets. I usually need to do it for a couple of days depending on the knee pain. I also do a few yoga stretches that also helps.
