Whenever the discussion of autism & vaccinations come up and people point out how there are more cases of autism now than there were historically, it always astonishes me that no one recognizes the simple fact that we actually consistently diagnose autism as its own thing now. It was more often diagnosed as part of schizophrenia (even as late as the 80s). HIstorically, our care and diagnosis of non-neurotypical people has been pretty terrible. There was a lot of dont talk about it, ignore it or put them in an asylum. Not to speak of our history of lobotomies, eugenics & forced sterilization. Context matters so much.
