Whenever theres some atrocity in the news carried out by westerners, you never hear calls for the moderate ones among us to apologize and to distance ourselves and to condemn it. The very thought of it feels preposterous, it just doesnt make sense in the prevailing ideology. But when it comes to marginalized and othered groups like Muslims, some people apparently think its the most reasonable thing in the world. It isnt; 1/5 of the worlds population isnt collectively guilty for the actions of a comparatively negligible number of people. When you say that you think Muslims should apologize for, or condemn, what happened in France, youre telling them that you consider them at fault for something they have nothing to do with - and this is something which only ever happens to a minority group. Even if you dont explicitly ask for it (though many people do) but you just say well done to the many Muslims who condemn it youre still implying that the rest of them ought to. If you do it, youre putting up ideological hoops for Muslims to jump through that dont exist for the rest of us; youre saying to them that in your eyes, their humanity is perpetually provisional and youll revoke it and lump them in with the terrorists at the first ideological misdeed. #Islamophobia
