Where do Tottenham Hotspur turn after missing out on David Villa? Tottenham Hotspur’s number one striker target has apparently opted to move to Atletico Madrid, who should Andre Villas-Boas turn to instead? For once, it all looked like Tottenham Hotspur were keen to get the bulk of their transfer business done early this summer. With Paulinho secured at the weekend, and David Villa seemingly close to joining the Brazilian at White Hart Lane, the team would just take fine-tuning from there on out. However Villa will instead move to Atletico Madrid, leaving Spurs in need of a new primary target. The first names that spring to mind are Christian Benteke, Roberto Soldado and Alvaro Negredo. These three players are all likely to be available from their clubs at the right price, with Benteke handing in a transfer request last night to attempt to force Aston Villa’s hand. However that price will almost certainly be over £20million in each case, a fee that Spurs would traditionally have baulked at. Spurs are reportedly the frontrunners in the race for Benteke, but spending £25million on a 22-year-old with just one year’s experience in the Premier League is a gamble they would have been unlikely to take in the past, so unless there is a radically new approach to transfers at White Hart Lane this looks like a tricky move to complete. With that in mind Spurs should also be looking at potential bargains from around the world, trying to sign a player on the up rather than splashing out on an established name. Obviously at some stage there will be links to Leandro Damiao, but Spurs seem to have cooled on the Brazilian, who could head to Napoli to help replace Edinson Cavani. There are also plenty of good players around Europe who will be available for a reasonable price this summer, and if Spurs pick the right man, they could be a real boost to their striking options. Juventus have indicated Mirko Vucinic will be allowed to leave this summer, and the Montenegrin would be an experienced addition to Spurs’ line-up who can play either in the centre or on the flanks of an attack. Roma’s Pablo Osvaldo should also be considered, although the striker’s temper might make Franco Baldini unwilling to work with him again. The worry for Spurs fans is that whilst the Villa deal looked like it could be completed quickly, any other move could take weeks of wrangling, and it might just end up being a deadline day move that sees a new forward arrive at Spurs, either that or Harry Kane gets promoted.
