" Keeping oneself from committing unethical acts either out of fear of eternal damning retribution, hope for eternal reward, or both isn’t ethical or moral, it’s simply minding your “p”s and “q”s in front of Big Brother. Even using this ridiculous question in an argument with an atheist or agnostic severely undercuts the notion that the speaker is a good person at all – it leads the questioned to imagine that, without those threats of hellfire and those promises of paradise, the questioner would kill, rape, and steal without a moment’s thought. The dogma of religion is, apparently, the only thing keeping this sadist and his or her massive ilk in check. How horrifying! "
