Where online travellers go in Germany The period from September - TopicsExpress

Where online travellers go in Germany The period from September to Christmas has proven popular for German travel among social media users. But where were these cybertrippers bound? Insights into their preferences are given by the 10 leading responses to the Facebook blog Raven Travel Guides Europe (also on Tumblr as ravenguidesgermany) and at the Raven Travel Guides Germany Twitter account @RavenGermany during 2014. On Twitter, the August 25 picture of the extraordinary summer tint of the river Lech at Füssen aroused by far the strongest response. Including retweets, this rare sight attracted more than 4100 views. The colour is widely attributed to the dissolution of Alpine limestone in the river’s waters. Winning easily the greatest number of Facebook views, as well as a strong Twitter response, was the December 12 blog post ‘Seven places in Germany you hadnt planned to travel – but should’. This subjective list of lesser-known German destinations was weighted toward towns preserving their historical aspect – a Raven Guides speciality – with a sympathy for attractive settings. The seven listed were Dinkelsbühl, Goslar, Koblenz, Meissen, Passau, Wernigerode and Wismar, attracting 1800 views combined. The September 25 tweet showing some of Hamburg’s oldest buildings along Deichstraße, as seen from the bridge over Nikolaifleet, generated well over 1100 views. Just the week before, the interest in Würzburg was demonstrated when a picture of the city’s magnificent Baroque Residenz proved almost as popular. In October, more mainstream travel tastes favoured the two-part blog post ‘Germany A-Z: Munich’, which took a virtual stroll through the Bavarian capital’s old town and palace district to the parklands of Englischer Garten. Social media attention also peaked when the Raven Travel Guides Germany website went live in mid-May at ravenguides. Since the launch, the site has logged more than 4500 page views by 1800 users from more than 120 countries. When the Raven Guides free digital magazine Germany for Travellers 2014-15 went live on the issuu platform on October 2, social media interest was almost as keen – perhaps helped by its inclusion of a bonus free guide to Würzburg. A November 28 blog preview of major German Advent-Christmas markets was, not surprisingly, popular on Facebook. These markets, with their combination of festive food, ornaments and atmosphere, attract millions of visitors each year. On December 5 Raven Guides visited one of Berlin’s popular areas in ‘Germany A-Z: Prenzlauer Berg’, a district gentrified since reunification – by contrast with its working-class history. Holiday apartments are nothing new in Germany and the December 9 blog post ‘Travel tip: why Germany always liked apartments’ spoke to the current international popularity of these as city accommodation. Raven Travel Guides Germany is also on Pinterest and blogs will appear on Google+ during 2015.
