But many of Romes gorgeous young people are simply out to window shop, lovelier in their youth than any pointy purchase could make their well-heeled elders. On a Roman Christmas many years ago, one such girl stood long at the window of Fendi, marveling like a madonna at what she saw. A boy with movie star looks approached her. Youll never own that, he told her, jerking his head at a fur on display. A very bad pick-up line, but then some boys think they can insult you into bed. I want only to be seen with it, she answered. And how will you manage that?, he demanded to know. I am being seen with it, she explained, just not by the right man. And she walked away.
