Where were you when the world stopped turning? Alan Jacksons song ..... has been going through my mind all day. Where was I? I had just walked into my office at DHS (just before 8 a.m..........left home to drive there 15 minutes earlier). One of the secretaries was already at her desk and she buzzed me that I had a phone call....and I think it is your son. Unusual at that time of day..... When I took the call Jared was almost hysterical. I could hear ambulances in the background and my first thought was that he had been in a wreck (in Dallas). He begin to tell me that the WTC had been hit by a plane and that he couldnt get his cousin Julie on the phone. I was booting up my computer....and immediately went to a news site and there it was.......Yes.....Julie was in tower 2.....But, she survived. It was another hour and half before we heard from her. She was able to get a phone call out to her mother. It was another four or five hours before we heard from her again. My husbands niece, Julie, made a good decision to leave the building........Her story is an amazing one. During that morning we were also concerned about Bobby King, Jareds high school and life-long friend, who was in the Pentagon. He survived. Jody White......son of one of my co-workers was also in DC...., but had gone on an errand..... He was not in danger. A cousin of one of our co-workers was attending a meeting in Tower One....above the level where the plane hit. I learned later that another young man I had known through church youth group (he was from Marvell)......survived at the Pentagon....., but had quite the story to tell. We all survived that day, but the scars of what happened to our country that day will always be just a thought away.
