Whether its in Canada, the Amazon, the Serengeti or the Australian outback, Indigenous people speak of Earth as their mother and tell us we are created by the four sacred elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. From First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Canada and Indigenous people around the world, I learned that, as environmentalists, we had defined problems incorrectly. I had pressed for laws and institutions to regulate our interaction with the environment when, in fact, there is no environment out there, separate from us. I came to realize that we are the environment.
