Whether you agree with his opinions or not; whether you like his work or not, Harlan Ellison, who turns 80 today, has been a tireless advocate for writers rights since the 1960s. (And he successfully settled with James Cameron after suing him for freely using parts of Harlans Soldier and Demon With A Glass Hand.) His two collections of TV columns, The Glass Teat and The Other Glass Teat are still worth reading. He also once referred to Star Trek as a cop show in outer space. When I was 18, I got to tell him at a signing that his friends Leo and Diane Dillon were teaching at my art school; and a year later, there was Harlan, reading Shatterday aloud for the first time with Leo and Diane in attendance.
