Whether you tune into television news, get yours from the internet, or champion the printed fare, chances are youve probably heard something about the recent events in Ukraine. Putin is invading Ukraine! or Putin thumbing his nose at Ukrainian autonomy! or even better yet Putin gives the proverbial finger to Obama! Our media kind of limits our knowledge of the big picture, so Im here to clear that up. Unfortunately what is now happening in that part of the world is the result of years of bad choices and corruption in the highest echelons of government. An economy on the brink of total collapse. A national bank with some 12 billion dollars left. A country losing its ability to use natural gas because it cannot afford to pay its debtors. Social unrest and questions over sovereignty. Now ousted President Viktor Yanukovych has taken asylum in Russia. And that is where our current situation begins. Viktor Yanukovych was chosen and placed in power by Vladimir Putin. It was the promise of Ukrainian fealty to Russia that stayed Putins hand from annexing it years ago. Its no surprise that Yanukovychs exile raised alarms back in The Motherland. The situation as of now, is that Russia all of the sudden wants the money that is owed to it by Ukraine for natural gas. Interesting time to go debt collecting. And to put economic sanctions on a country that values you as its main trade partner. A side note on why good old Viktor was exiled; basically draining the government of money to subsidize an incredibly lavish lifestyle while everyone else was basically impoverished and the countrys financial system plummeted toward its doom. The gigantic mansion. The restaurant in the shape of a pirate ship, the zoo, the golf course, and the yacht club, the cognac and vodka bottles bearing his face. In a country barely making ends meet, Yanukovych was comfortably living in a fairy tale world. And thus we have our current problem. Ukraine wants to keep its sovereignty, yet has no stable government in place as of now. Russia seeks payment on debts that are due, while taking away their very means to be able to begin to pay it. On top of these, it seems that Russia has invaded their borders. Only a matter of time before this wayward country is once again part of what was once the USSR. So where does the USA come into play? Well it doesnt. Not really. Until Obama does another one of his line in the sand things (see SYRIA). Only this time his exact words were There will be costs if Russia makes any military maneuvers inside of Ukraines borders. And ever since he made that statement well wouldnt you know, the Russian military presence has increased dramatically inside of that little country. And despite photographers and journalists the world over snapping pictures of Russian troops marching from street to street Putin denies that there are any Russian soldiers in the Crimea region. Leave it to our amazing Commander in Chief to make a bad situation worse. By verbally threatening Russia with absolutely no plans of following through, the door has been left wide open for Putin to start making the USA look weak and stupid on the world stage yet again. As if the Ukraine didnt have enough to deal with already, now Putin it seems plans on annexing them thanks to the empty threats compliments of our President. Mr. O. If you have any intentions of saving yourself from looking like the jackass you have become, please send American troops to the Crimea region. Im not advocating our military get involved – dont get me wrong. Just some advice for our American emperor if he ever plans on people to stop laughing at him the world over.
