Whew..I had to break it up a bit..because theres so much to share about the 80s. Ok back to where I finished. In December of 1982..Michael Jacksons Thriller album was released..no one knew at that time that it would become the most sold album..EVER. Jackson also became the first non white artist to appear on MTV. To counter MTV..in NYC Ralph McDaniels Video Music Box appeared on Channel 31..and on Channel 7 WKTU New York Hot Tracks appeared. These shows showed videos by black artists. New groups such as New Edition appeared around this time. Video was here to stay. Then one Sunday night in May of 1983 the music industry changed forever. With glitter socks and one glove..during the 25th anniversary of Motown show on NBC..Michael Jackson performed Billie Jean and Moonwalked his way thru the stratosphere. Forget about the craziness of jacksons later life, for those of us who was alive in 1983..this was the biggest thing you probably ever saw. Remember..very few people had cable. There was only 7 channels to watch..so EVERYONE saw this proformance. In 1983 two rappers and a DJ from Hollis Queens made their debut with Sucker MCs. RUN-DMC and Jam Master Jay became the most influential rappers of the 80s. But the 80s or as I would say the Platnium age of rap had so many stars. LL Cool J, Kurtis Blow, The Fat Boys, UTFO, Eric B & Rakim, KRS-One, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane..the list goes on and on. How the early eighties was more of a mixed bag of music, around 1983..black music began to change. Prince s 1999 album was released and in 1984 he released Purple Rain. The album and the movie of the same name placed him in that same rarified air as Michael Jackson. 1984 also saw the best group of artists release albums in the same year..probably ever. You had bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson was still on the charts with Thriller, Lionel Richie..this was an incredible time to be a music fan. LL Cool J, Run DMC, Kurtis Blow all released albums that year. between 1982-85..the music that was released was for my generation..the best! Next the mid 80s!
