“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. [Matthew 7:9-12, NIV] Duh! I mean, the questions a no-brainer, right? Or is it? How many times have we heard it expressed, in some form or fashion, that if we arent good little Christians, Santa, I mean God, will only give us a lump of coal, or a snake, or as Charlie Brown said it repeatedly, I got a rock! There is something decidedly wrong with the whole idea that God, our Heavenly Father, would give us, His children, anything other than good gifts. Of course, a big part of the issue lies in the fact that He doesnt always give us what we want, or what we think we deserve, so we get all whiney and complain that God doesnt really love us or care for us anymore. Sound familiar? So we throw our little tantrums, yelling, I hate You! I hate You! I hate You! then storm off to our rooms and slam the door behind us. (And every parent nodded sagely.) The whole thing is, of course, ridiculous, which is the point Jesus is making, but just to push the point home He adds the, Do to others what you would want them to do to you, thing. Nuts. Why does He keep doing stuff like that?
