Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? - Luke 15:4 (NRSV) At my first appointment as a pastor, we had moved into the parsonage with our three cats and Maggie — a fun-loving, tail-wagging Basset with lots of energy. Two parishioners and I set to building a dog pen and put Maggie inside to let her get acquainted with her new home. After an hour or two, I decided to go out and check on her. I panicked when I saw that Maggie was gone. Our family was worried because an interstate highway was very close. I could see in my mind’s eye her poor lifeless body. We got into the truck and drove all over, looking for her and calling her name. We found her checking out a chicken pen. When she saw me, she started running toward me. What a reunion — wagging, barking, jumping, running around in circles — and Maggie was happy too. What a celebration! My Maggie who was lost was now found! From the beginning, that’s the way God searches for us. It is not the person who goes searching for God but God who goes searching for the person. The whole Bible is a story of God searching for us until our relationship was restored in Christ.
