While I agree with this guys point, that any political power that demands behavior loyal to a belief from people who dont subscribe to it is oppressive and should be ridiculed in order to keep that free voice strong, I think that a lot of people turn this idea into a reason to hold that nothing at all should be beyond ridicule. This guy, for example, said he only draws the line at violence. I think humiliating retarded and disabled children might be one of probably many other restrictions Id put on ridicule. ALSO, I think its important to remember that this belief in standing up for free speech is a western one. If it wasnt for people like Locke and Rousseau WE wouldnt even have it. Its an established western bias weve adopted from our history. We SHOULD be allow free speech in OUR western world, but when the west IMPOSES free speech on cultures who dont believe in it, WEre the political power demanding behavior loyal to our belief. And ever since WWII weve thought of ourselves as doing the world a favor by infecting it with our brand of freedom.....and now the same capitalistic forces that are cannibalizing us are at play even in China. Many people of the middle east see this........the fundamentalists feel that theyre at war with our do-gooding. The whole reason theyve become so fanatical is because we cant keep out of their countrys politics and economies. This is a much bigger issue than the intolerance many Muslims have for laughing at themselves, Mohammad and their religious beliefs.
