While I do partially agree with some of whats said here (listen to the audio), I have to refute some of it. Our representatives should not have comments on the wealth of the majority of IMSA students, because though it may be true, IMSA doesnt just accept rich people. Im broke as a joke and I got in, and so did so many other students. Wealth, and the way they used it, has very little to do with it. However, they could have used it in a different way. Wealthier people, - who truthfully, do tend to be white or asian because of how the entire american system has been set up since slavery times -, get better educations because when you make more money you pay more taxes which means more money goes into your childs school which means they learn more and with better quality. In all actuality there was absolutely no way in hell I could have learned the same things as my white and asian counterpart peers just by going to school, its just the way the world works, and as a result of this there arent as many Zions who took advantage of the extra opportunities around to make sure they still got a proper education, so of course there are going to be less colored people in a smart school. Its all a cycle, white people dont give us jobs so we cant make money so we cant live in the neighborhoods where our children will get a better education so they cant go to schools like IMSA or get a job one day. And as far as the faculty and staff thing, they got that totally backwards (im pretty sure), because faculty is the teachers, in which we only have Dr. White (correct me if im wrong but shes the only one i can think of). She is literally the only black and/or latino faculty member. We have Indian faculty but they fall under the asian category when statistics are made. And as far as black and latino staff, well on that part the Reps. need to slap themselves because Keith, Q, Adrienne, Minerva, the mexican lady by ms. adrienne office, the lady that works with K.I., and a few more..... they said we had none. Anyway. I think they shouldnt blame Administration for the percentages of black/latino students to white/asian students because in all honesty, they get hella less applications for black/latinos because of what I said above. What are they supposed to do about that? I mean besides the numerous outreach programs that they have specifically designed for underprivileged (colored) kids? I guess what Im getting at is, I think IMSA is trying, but they can only do so much. As far as cutting the money, I still say cut it because honestly, there are HELLA more needing and deserving places for it in Illinois, like for starters, Chicago Public Schools. Im just saying. IMSA really does not need all the money that we get. Why do we steadily get rewarded for something that we would be doing regardless (being smart and getting an education)? I think more focus (and money) needs to go on the kids who need it, not the ones who dont. SUMMARY: Basically theyre idea is kind of in the right direction sort of maybe, but theyre presentation of it and theyre argument was total shit. Youre supposed to be our representatives. Do better and maybe IMSA can achieve better.
