While I tend to agree with Lovecraft’s sentiment that man’s fear of the unknown is paramount, I do think there’s more fun to be had by showing the monster lurking in the shadows, if only because doing so gives me an opportunity to gross you out. However, showing the monster—and its origins—sometimes kills the magic, and knowing when to show that impossible, lurking thing rather than describe the dread of pondering its existence is often tricky. I rolled the dice with that scene in TLM when we learn how the Cretins and Yawning are made. No one has complained about it (other than to say it made them nauseous, which I consider a small victory), but I often wonder if I jumped the gun there. As I head into Book #3 and lay out plans to expose some of the Monochrome’s secrets, I’m beginning to question just how much I –should– reveal as I send Mr. Candle off to that ominous column on the horizon. Ultimately the story will dictate what is necessary, but as the author it’s my job to balance those elements behind the scenes and preserve the magic as much as I can. Regardless of how it comes together, I suppose there will still be some surprises in store for you—and you will probably curse me for them. #Monochrome #amwriting
