While I wouldnt say its the best Marvel movie ever, GoTG does - TopicsExpress

While I wouldnt say its the best Marvel movie ever, GoTG does certainly rank up there, and continues the genre-defying trend started by the Winter Soldier. If the latter is the conspiracy/political thriller Marvel movie, GoTG fills in the 80s comedic-sci fi space romp, in the spirit of Serenity, Galaxy Quest or Spaceballs. All the requisite tropes that Abnnet and Lanning established are in attendance, though they serve more as backdrops and props than being integral to the plot. Well, maybe Cosmo was talking psychically and we just couldnt hear him...in any case the fan service is well-appreciated. But maybe, whats truly amazing is Gunns ability to pull such heartfelt emotion from a bunch of neer do wells while still managing to produce such genuinely full on gut busting LOLS. The cast is pitch perfect and while the inevitable alterations are present, they always serve a good story. Its a testament to Gunns directorial chops that the truly stand-out characters are the two who technically arent even *really* there. The plot isnt too terribly original, or I would say even integral, to the movies enjoyment. This movie is truly more about the journey, rather than the already well traveled, well visited destination. Id say dont stay for the after credits scene, unless your a Marvel completist...it truly is more in the vein of the Iron Man 3 after credits scene rather than say the Winter Soldiers reveal of Pietro and Wanda. The requisite connective tissue to the rest of the Marvel U is really set in the movie, since big mean and purple is basically a big driving force for the plot. I will say that, for fans of a certain character (and I know your out there), the extremely Gunn-esque after credits chaser scene will absolutely tickle you. The one complaint I do have is that the villains got the shoddy treatment. In the spirit of Malekith from the Dark World, poor Ronan barely gets any characterization, even though it wouldnt be too difficult to complicate his character by mentioning that he actually was a law enforcement officer on Hala, technically. The talents of poor Karen Gillen is hardly taken advantage of...since Nebula barely appears and her motivations arent made very clear or intelligible. Though, this is probably a very minor quibble since you really cant wait for the camera to swing back to our protagonists whenever the movie has to take time away from them. Over all 8.5/10. Bonus! Rockets journey to the theater and poster swag.
