While at one of the events I attended this wekend I was informed that someone has been running around claiming that they are the fourteenth great grand daughter of Juan Ponce de Leon. I am the 27th great grandson of Juan Ponce de Leon, its a status I can claim via documentation that I have acquired from the archives of Spain. Being a 27th great grandson means that I am directly descended from my ancestor. Remember, the word here is direct. Lets figure out if she has been telling the truth. Given that the average generation is 30 years, if you go back to the year 800 AD, thats about 40 generations. Potentially you have 240 ancestors. Thats more than 1 trillion ancestors alive in 800. I dont know what the population of Europe was in 800 but I strongly suspect it wasnt even close to one trillion people. I suspect it was only about 25 million. Its not surprising that you are related to many of them. Using the calculation given above a 14th great grand daughters ancestor would have lived, four hundred and twenty years ago. (420 is the number, folks). Juan Ponce de Leon was born 1458 - 1460. If Juan Ponce was born in 1458 that number would yield five hundred and fifty six years ago. If Juan Ponce was born in the year 1460 that number would yield five hundred and fifty four years ago. The woman is obviously a fraud. She is 134 years off Juan Ponce de Leons birthdate.if it happened 554 years ago. It gets worse folks if Juan Ponce de Leon was born 556 years ago then she would be 136 years short of his birth date. And, if anyone was the 14th great grand daughter of Juan Ponce de Leon, shed be mouldering in her grave today.
