While being greatly relieved that the fundamentalist Islamic - TopicsExpress

While being greatly relieved that the fundamentalist Islamic leader of Egypt, President Morsi, has been toppled in a coup, I still have to express some concerns lest this heralds a new prolonged period of military rule, characterized by the brutal denial of human rights, with all the magnificent goals of the revolution leading to the downfall of the former president Mubarak quashed, leading Egypt back to the bad old days of sycophancy to the USA and Israel, with little social or political progress in the short or even long term. I hope that the whole world keeps constant pressure on the new military leaders to keep to their word by holding legitimate and fresh presidential elections ASAP and that the new leaders do not renege on their word, so that a democratically elected president hopefully with secular views can be properly elected president of the country. Egypt has for too long been governed by harsh and draconian regimes, such as under the regime of President Mubarak, who quite cynically and with the support of his friends in Washington violated human rights and inflicted great suffering on whole sections of society. We have had enough of such regimes on the continent of Africa. I wish the Egyptian people well in their forthcoming struggles.
