While everyone is talking about tolerance/intolerance in regards to Mozilla CEO Brandon Eich getting ousted - I have been wondering what the right way to be tolerant in public discourse is. One of the biggest anti-Mozilla complaints I hear is that Mozilla is being intolerant against Eich & his socio-political views. This perspective is based on the idea that someone saying No intolerance allowed is, in and of itself, intolerant. The people in the boardroom who booted Eich certainly see themselves as taking an anti-intolerance stance. This all brings up the fallacy of tolerance - Simply by labelling someones views as something to be *tolerated,* you create a 2-tiered social system in which you are the benevolent tolerator, and they are the disgusting thing to be tolerated. For all my peaceniks out there - Can anyone think of a way to tolerate that respects someones personhood? Can you tolerate someone in an I-thou way? #Buber #Pregeneralconferencethoughts
