While hiking on the rim of the Secret Mountain Wilderness I walked up on a sleeping black bear on a hike today. During the 30 second encounter the first 5 seconds were awesome. Until he knew he wasnt alone. He stood up on his hind legs and our eyes met and it was game on. 20 yards of open ground. He went onto all fours, ears went back and then the charge. I didnt want to shoot him but he was giving me no option. The slack was out of the trigger front sight was good, I was picking out a spot on the vitals and then he stopped at 7 yards. Turned around and ran off the side of the canyon. Ive been around a lot of bears, even grizzlys, This one had an attitude. We are 1 and 1 on bears Steve Phoenix . That was my adrenaline rush for the day.
