While it is a little sad, I PRAISE UAB for having the fortitude to put EDUCATION FIRST. A Universitys primary concern should *always* be education, not *playing* sports...UAB also serves as a mecca for medical research and advancement. I would hate to think of the repercussions if funds were *redirected*...Which is more important ~ major advancements in lifesaving medical fields like Type I Diabetes or entertainment? “While this will be a challenging transition for the UAB family, the financial picture made our decision very clear,” UAB President Dr. Ray Watts said in the press release. “We will not cut the current athletic budget, but in order to invest at least another $49 million to keep football over the next five years, we would have to redirect funds away from other critical areas of importance like education, research, patient care or student services.” myfoxal/story/27527142/uab-football-program-will-be-shut-down
