While it never bothered me a bit... October 28, 2011, was not a happy day for some Louisville fans. On that late fall afternoon, the Big 12 Conference decided to formally invite West Virginia University to join the league, choosing the Mountaineers over Louisville. At that time, with the Big East already crumbling, Tom Jurich and the University of Louisville were desperately looking for a way out. Adding Louisville over West Virginia made sense in every way, but ultimately the Big 12 decided they’d rather have WVU. On that day, it looked as if the only opportunity that Louisville had to escape the free falling Big East had slipped through their fingers. Thirteen months later, being rejected from the Big 12 ended up being the best thing that ever happen to the athletic department at the University of Louisville as they were formally invited to the ACC. While things turned out great for "College of the Year" Louisville, the Big 12’s decision to add West Virginia when they could have had Louisville should be remembered as one of the more idiotic moves ever made from a conference. Makes you wonder if Obama is running the Big 12? Let’s take a look at how the two athletic departments have fared this year. Football: Louisville, 11-2, Sugar Bowl rout over SEC powerhouse Florida West Virginia, 6-7, Pinstripe Bowl (giggle) loss to Syracuse Men’s Basketball: Louisville, 35-5, National Champions West Virginia, 13-19, no post season appearance. Not even in the NIT! Women’s Basketball: Louisville, 29-9, National Championship Game West Virginia, 17-14, NCAA 1st Round Baseball: Louisville, 51-12, College World Series West Virginia, 33-26, no post season appearance
