While looking for something else on YouTube, a link to this upload of McKays tone poem popped up. I hadnt heard it a long time; I began to listen, and it was perfect for the day in this area, where the leaves are falling steadily and the wind whistles gently and cool. This piece a great work of American populism. There is a widescreen feeling to much of it, particularly noticeable in the panoramic climax. (I also love how the composer falls so delicately into the main theme stated by the english horn.) At this point one would think weve heard this done countless times, yet the composer doesnt resort to cliché; McKays vista is an honest and original utterance with a uniquely American voice. Hear it; it will make your day better.
