While not being afraid or hesitant in fervently criticizing many things done by the Sri Lankan government, we also must equally appreciate the good things done, which would of course bring positive and longterm benefits to the country. After a lapse of nearly 25 years, today the Colombo Jaffna Railway will be inaugurated, which is of course a positive symbol of progress in post-war Sri Lanka, enabling peoples from the North and South to come together as one Sri Lankan family. However, to be cautiously optimistic, while we make positive changes as a post- war Sri Lanka, for the country to be called a “post-conflict Sri Lanka”, we also must address the root causes of the 30 year war, which are fear and distrust among ethnic and religious groups. While the opening of the Colombo Jaffna Railway is indeed commendable, the environment must be created for people in this country to open up their minds and embrace one another as one Sri Lanka, and as a proud partner of the global community.
