While out last week exploring a waterfall in Ontonagon county called Penn Falls I ran across some poison ivy or poison sumac. Didnt start getting a rash until a couple days ago and it started to itch, didnt produce blisters. Rashes arent contagious but the oils can spread onto other areas of the body. Some natural remedies to help soothe the sensations as a result of poison ivy are: Baking soda bath or paste Oatmeal paste Organic apple cider vinegar Aloe Vera oils You can also get over the counter lotions like a calamine lotion usually found in a pink bottle like Caladryl. Some other items for itch are: Burts Bees Poison ivy soap Tecnu- Oak-n-ivy cleanser If you simply develop a rash like I did, over the counter treatments like these are fine. Exposure to face or genitals can become very serious so see a doctor. Also if you are affected in many areas of your body, you get serious blisters with oozing or puss developing, or you take on a fever you may need to see a doctor and be put on a corticosteroid like prednisone for up to two weeks. Best protection against poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac is to wear long sleeve shirts and wear pants into the woods. Also become familiar with what the plants look like. If you develop a rash just take the steps to minimize itch and dont scratch. Gear Up - Get Out - Explore More - Steve - Head Gear Agent
