While reading in the Old Testament, generally looking at the Israelites during the book of Judges, they were not doing what they were instructed by God. Spiritually, there is still a great lesson for a new generation of Israelites to learn--namely, that with obedience comes prosperity; with disobedience, adversity. For us today, for the busyness of this world and the need for more money, the fruitful seed gets put on the back shelf and left not watered, dies. [Third seed, Jesus talks about; we are running to and fro]. We are no different than the Israelites in Canaan. the incomplete conquests left Israel vulnerable to the worldly influences around them. As they begin to evolve into a more agricultural society, the Israelites will become increasingly attracted by the Canaanite culture of worship, idolatry. [For us, it is mingling with everything our society is doing around us, trying it, beginning to justify our lifestyle and what we do, watch, allow or say; we think we are okay.] A strong spirit of compromise leads to intermarriage, idolatry and immorality for the Israelites. The combination of national sin and unconquered inhabitants results in dominance and oppression by various pagan people, just as God predicted. [For us today, because we mix church and the worldly entertainment together; we begin to get bored with whats going on in church, or we dont like what we are hearing because we dont want to give up what we are justifying.] Either way, Israelites back then and now, Americans and people all over the world are having this same trial by fire. How will you and I come out of it? How do we stay in the shelter of the Most High and rest in the shadow of the Almighty, with the high flood waters in our atmosphere drowning us with trash and occupying our time, leaving no time with our Lord and Savior?
