While some of us took time off in August for summer vacation, the professionals at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission were hard at work recalling dangerous products. Melting tea pots, shatter-prone tea tumblers, and firestarting table top torches are featured in the latest edition of the CPSC’s “Recall Roundup.” Get the details here:cpsc.gov/en/Media/Videos/Recalls/Recall-Roundup-August-28-2013/, then get in your car and drive the products back to the store where you purchased them to receive a full refund. We also wanted to share news about one faulty and dangerous product that was recalled after the latest episode of “Recall Roundup” was recorded. If, like many people in our area, you use a dehumidifier to keep you basement dry during the damp spring and summer months, take a few minutes to make sure your unit was not included in the recall of products manufactured by Gree Electric Appliances of China. According to the CPSC the units can smoke, overheat, and catch fire. To date 165 incidents, including 46 fires resulting in more than $2 million in property damage have been reported. The dehumidifiers carry 12 different brand names: Danby, De’Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole, Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir and SuperClima. The units were sold at AAFES, HH Gregg, Home Depot, Kmart, Lowe’s, Menards, Mills Fleet Farm, Sam’s Club, Sears and other stores nationwide and in Canada, and online at Amazon and Ebay, from January 2005 through August 2013 for between $110 and $400. The brand name and the pint capacity are printed on the front of the dehumidifier. The model number and date code are printed on a sticker on the back, front or side of the unit. The dehumidifiers are white, beige, gray or black plastic and measure between 19 and 24 inches tall, 13 and 15 inches wide, and 9 and 11 inches deep. If you believe you may have one of these units in your home visit the CPSC website by following this linkcpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2013/Gree-Recalls-12-Brands-of-Dehumidifiers/ to view a complete list of model numbers subject to recall.
